....and the steam builds ...and the steam builds




A great game, that went scoreless into the sixth inning. The pitching was good, that bats were almost as cold as the air. The Cougars would win the game 1-0, to sweep the opening day double header.

Oakland's number one pick in last years draft out of Kentucky made his first start for the Cougars. Joe Blanton pitched very well, he got into the fifth inning with giving up three hits and striking out five.

In the third inning Blanton got out of trouble. Craig Ringe doubled to center to lead off the inning. Juan Senreiso then lined out to left. Nate Gold then lined out to center for the second out. Pedro Quero grounded out to second to end the inning and strand Ringe at second.

Erik Thompson started for the Lumberkings, he retired the first ten Cougars he faced and 13 out of the first 14. The only one he didnt retired he hit.

The Cougars had a chance to score in the fifth inning. Kirk Nordness started the inning with a grounder to short. Brian Stavinsky double to left. He owuld get to third on a passed ball. Jason Basil would reach base on an fielding error by the second baseman Gabriel Delgado. He would get to second on that same passed ball. Kory Wayment struck out swingin. Nick Rogers walked to load the bases. J.P.Schmidt then popped up to short to end the inning.

John McCurdy led off the sixth inning with a walk. Brant Colamarino then was hit by a pitch. John Suomi put down the sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Kirk Nordness then reached on a fiedler's choice. McCurdy would be out at home on the play. Brina Stavinsky singled to right to score Colamarino for the first run of the game. The Cougars tried to score two runs but Nordness was thrown out at the plate, the collison with the catcher Manny Santana basically knocked Santana out.
