The best start in Lansing Lugnuts history just got better.

After going 2-5 in the first seven games last year, the Lugnuts improved to 5-2 this season with an 8-3 victory over the West Michigan WhiteCaps on Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park.

Lansing won three games in the four game series.

The Lugnuts took command quickly with three runs on five hits in the first inning.

"When you're in a position like this and leading a series, it's very important to put the other team at a disadvantage early." Lugnuts manager Julio Garcia said.

Lansing lead off hitter Ryan Theriot extended the lead in the second inning with his first home run of the season. The homer was just the Lugnuts' second of the season.

"I'm not used to doing that," Theriot said, "I try to get out of the box as fast as I can and I didn't even see where it went untill I saw the umpire's arm."

Teammates Ronny Cedeno and J.J. Johnson followed up Theriot's shot with back to back doubles. The Lugnuts scored again on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Corey Slavik to take a 5-1 lead going into the third inning.

The Lugnuts committed three errors by also executed three double plays, the third time they've done that this season.

"It's a great thing to have our defense playing like that," Garcia said, "If we don't turn one or two of those double plays we are in trouble."

Adam Wynegar (1-1) got the start on the mound and earned the win after throwing five innings with six hits, five strikeouts and no earned runs.
