West Michigan short stop Don Kelly didn't mind waiting nearly five hours for his chance to be a hero Friday night.
Kelly's two out RBI double in the bottom of the 16th inning allowed Juan Gonzalez to come around from first base with the game winner giving West Michigan a 2-1 victory over South Bend in Midwest League action.
A wild pitch by Hawks reliever Joe Ricciardi (0-1) allowing Gonzalez to reach saftely after striking out set the stage for Kelly's heroics.
The setback spoiled a gutsy effort by Hawks pitching which recorded 21 strikeouts in the marathon contest.
South Bend (2-7) tallied it's only run in the second inning as Kyle Nichols scored as a result of one of four errors by the WhiteCaps.
It seemed like it would be enough for Hawks starter Greg Perkin.
The righty retired the first 16 batters he faced and was cruising along until David Mattle connected for a game tying homer in the eighth inning.
Perkin allowed two hits and struck out 10 during his eight innings of work.
Right handed reliever Matt Wilkinson was just as impressive for South Bend with seven strikeouts in his four inning stint.
Lino Garcia, Jeramy Janz, Scott Hairston and Nichols each had a double for the Hawks, who stranded 11 runners.
