West Michigan arrived at Coveleski Stadium Tuesday for the start of their series with South Bend near the bottom of the Midwest League hitting statistics.

After feasting on South Bend pitching, the WhiteCaps were probably in no hurry to leave. After dropping the series opener, West Michigan won the last three collecting 42 hits in the three games.

Friday, South Bend pitchers handed out 12 base on balls and West Michigan mixed in 15 hits for an easy 9-4 Midwest League baseball victory over South Bend.

West Michigan batters were 50 for 151 in the four games, a hefty .331 average.

"We hit well when it was real cold early, then South Bend came to town and really shut us down," said West Michigan manager Phil Regan. "Then we come down here facing some of the same pitcehrs and hit well. I don't know why, I really like South Bend's pitching staff. our pitchers had a good series too."

Neither start, Kevin McDowell of West Michigan nor Greg Perkin of South Bend, lasted long. But the WhiteCaps relievers allowed just four hits over the last five innings, Jerrod Fuell earned the victory.

Peter Sikiaras was a tough luck loser for the South Bend SilverHawks. With the score tied at 4-4 in the fifth, the WhiteCaps loaded the bases on one hit that barely eluded second baseman, Scott Hairston and two infield squibbers.

David Mattle, who was 9 for 14 int he series plus a couple of walks, blooped and RBI single against Heath Heiberger that gave the visitors a 5-4 lead.

West Michigan expanded the lead from there, batting around in the eighth and scoring four times on just two hits. A double play ball that would have ended the inning with only one run scoring was bobbled by Rick Haydel, opening the door for the big inning.

The SilverHawks scored all four of their runs in the fourth, and inning helped by four West Michigan errors, to get starter Perkin off the hook.

A single by Jeramy Janz and a double down the right field line from Bryan Loeb contributed to the inning.,br>
Roster Moves
Infielder Kevin Brand and outfielder Clark mace, on the South Bend disabled list since the season started, were activated Friday. Both played in the ninth inning.
