South Bend SilverHawks first baseman Kyle Nichols put his bat to good use once again Tuesday night.

Nichols came through with an RBI double in the ninth inning to help South Bend to a 2-1 victory over Fort Wayne in Midwest League baseball action.

Clinging to a 1-0 margin, Nichols' shot down the right field line scored mike Lopez with what proved to be the game winner as Fort Wayne scored once in the bottom half of the frame and left the tying run at third base.

Over his last four games, Nichols has two home runs and five RBIs.

The Hawks tallied their first run in the seventh inning against Jon Huber (1-2) as Scott Hairston walked, moved to second on a groundout, advanced to third on a wil dpitch, and then scored on Bryan Loeb's two out double.

Benefitting from Loeb's hit was South Bend right hander Justin Wechsler (2-2) who surrendered only three hits and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings.

Reliever Brian Bruney allowed just one hit over the next 1 2/3 innings to preserve the lead.

Corby Medlin overcame a throwing error in the ninth to pick up his second save by retiring Doc Brooks on a ground ball to second baseman Hairston.
