Kane County Cougars at Fort Wayne Wizards

May 15th, 2004

The Cougars bats came out of semi-hibnation today as they put together seven hits and eight runs. The three errors that the Wizards made were more of a result of the eight runs than anything though. Steve Bondurant was great again, he picked up his sixth win of the season.

Bonduant went the first five and two thirds, he allowed two hits and one run. Bondurant walked three and struck out nine. He struck out the first three he saw. The second and the sixth innings were where he got into trouble. Between those he retired nine out of ten Wizards hitters.

In the second inning, Fernando Valenzuela Jr. led off with a single to center. Mark McRoberts then walked. Greg Bochy, yes he is the son of Bruce, the Padres skipper. He struck out. Skip Adams then walked to load the bases with only one out. Colt Morton would reach on a fielder's choice, with Adams being out at second. It wasnt a double play because of the take out slide from Adams. On the play Valenzuela scored. Juan Ciriaco then fouled out ot second to end the inning. In the sixth inning with one out Brian Wahlbrink would walk. Valenzuela then singled to right. McRoberts would strike out. Bondurant would be taken out after that. J.R. Pickens came on and got Bochy to line out to second ot end the frame.

The Cougars offense had many chances to put up some real big numbers, but eight runs was enough today. In the first inning Brian Ingram led off by being hit by a pitch. Luke Appert then took a pitch over the right field wall for a two run homer.

Fort Wayne's starter was Clark Girardeau, he pitched well but made too many mistakes. Clark went int o the sixth inning, he gave up three hits and four runs. Only two of those runs were earned. He walked four and struck out eleven. He would strike out the side in the second.

The Cougars put up two more runs in the third inning. Luis Perez would leadoff by reaching on an error by the first baseman, in which the grounder just went between his legs. Perez then stole second. Ingram walked. Appert then reached on a fielder's choice, with Ingram being out at second. On the play the shortstop got the call on Ingram ont eh famous area code play, the throw to first was too late for the double play. David Castillo woul then walk to load the bases. Eddie Kim struck out for the second out. Brian Snyder would reach on an error by the second baseman, Perez scored on the play.

With one out in the sixth inning, Luis perez would single to center, then steal second. Ingram flew out to right. Appert would reach on another error by the second baseman, the ball went under the glove. On the play Perez would score.

The final three runs the Cougars would score would come in the ninth. Eddie Kim leadoff with a homer to right. Snyder then walked. Majewski would fly to left. Vasili Spanos would reach on a fielder's choice. On the play Snyder would beat the throw to second so everyone was safe. One out later, Perez doubled to center to score both Snyder and Spanos.

Kane County had a few more chances in the game, in the fifth inning with one out Kim singled to left. One out later Majewski doubled to right, Kim would go to third. The Wizards then made a pitching change, Spanos would ground to short to end the inning. In the eight inning the Cougars would leave the bases loaded. With one out Kory Wayment singled to left, he would get to second on a wild pitch. One out later Ingram walked. Appert followed him with a walk, which loaded the bases. Again the Wizards would make a pitching change, Castillo would hit a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Pickens and Jairo Garcia wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth. Peeter Ramos lead off by reaching ona dropped third strike, the throw to first was offline. Wahlbrink walked. Valenzuela would then strike out for the first out. McRobert would be caught looking. Bochy then walked to load the bases.Jairo Garica then came on to replace Pickens, he would then strike out Skip Adams to end the inning.

Brian Ingram had a great game. No he didnt get a hit and he only got credit for one at bat in the game. He walked four times, and reach by being hit by a pitch in the first. He would only score one run, plus he stole a base.
