Kane County Cougars at Cedar Rapids Kernels

May 22nd, 2004

The Cougars had to come from behind to win the game in the top of the ninth, but they got it done to stay in first place in their divison. With the score tied at four going into the ninth, the Kernels brought in Scott Hindman to pitch. Brian Ingram would great him with a single to third. Luke Appert was then hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Brian Snyder would draw a walk to load the bases. Dustin Majewski then delivered the big blow with a double to right to score both Ingram and Appert with what would be the winning runs.

The only reason the Cougars had a shot in the ninth was because of the bullpen. In the eighth inning J.R. Pickens came in a struck out the first two he faced. The he gave up two straight singles to center. After that he got Tommy Duenas to strike out to get out of the inning. In the ninth Jairo Garcia would give up a hit but he got Bobby Wilson to fly to center to end the game.

Kane County scored three runs in the seventh to get back into the game. With one out David Harriman singled to right, he would get to second on a wild pitch. Luis Perez walked along with Chris Tritle, which would load the bases. Ingram lined one down the right field line for a single to score both Harriman and Perez. The Kernels then made a pitching change to bring in Bob Zimmerman to replace Allen Buckley. Appert greated him with a fly to center. Tritle would tag up on the play and score the third run of the inning.

Cedar Rapids scored first in the game, in the first inning off of Cougars starter Chris Dunwell. Brandon Wood would hit a two out solo homer to right. Dunwell would get into trouble two of the next four innings but would some how get out of it. In the third, Caleb Maher led off with a single to left. Two outs later, Sean Rodriguez doubled to right, Maher made it to third. Brandon Wood would come back up, this time he would strike out looking to end the inning.

In the fourth the Kernels had two more runners on base. Bobby Wilson led off with a single to center. One out later Matt Pali was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Blake Balkcom then struck out for the second out. Maher flew out to right to end the inning with the runners stranded on second and third.

Lets not forget the Cougars also wasted a couple of early chances to score some runs too. In the third inning with one out Ingram doubled to right. Appert then grounded out to first, to allow Ingram to get to third. Castillo would then walk. With two outs and runners on first and third, Vasili Spanos popped out to second to end the inning. In the fourth inning a two out single by Harriman would unfortunatly be it. Harriman tried to turn it into a double and would be toast. In the fifth a runner on second and one out led to nothing.

The Kernels would be the ones to score next after all of those chances. In the sixth inning Wood led off with a single to center. Wilson then homerd to left to make it a three to one game. After the Cougars scored their three runs in the top of the seventh, the Kernels would then score a run to tie the game back up. Dunwell was replaced by Brigmer Leon to open the inning. Maher greated him with a single to center. Duenas singled to left, Maher went to third. Howie Kendrick then flew to left, Maher tagged up and would score. With one out in the inning and a runner on first, Rodriguez would reach on a fielder's choice on a grounder to third that would become an error. Wood then flew to left, Duenas tagged up and reached third. Wilson would pop up to second to end the inning.
