The Lugnuts managed only three hits and ran up against an excellent performance by Peoria's starting pitcher Sunday.

Lansing (27-28) doubled in three seperate innings, but couldn't get to Rich Burgess in a 7-0 loss to the Chiefs. Burgess (4-3) went eight innings, allowing three hits, no walks and striking out six.

"Burgess kept us off strike all day," said Lansing manager Julio Garcia, "He used both sides of the plate and we didn't hit many hard."

Brad Bouras who collected one of the doubles, said Burgess kept the ball down. Burgess entered with an ERA of 2.44.

"He had real good command off speed," Bouras said, "You can't do much when the ump is calling the low strike and the pitcher is down."

Lansing pitcher Carmer Pignatiello (5-3) couldn't match his opponent's performance, allowing 13 hits, six runs, five earned, with four strikeouts and one walk.

"The first three innings I threw well on the outer half," Pignatiello said, "They started going the other way and I left a few over the plate."

The 13 hits marked a season high for Pignatiello. He was also the victim of a lack of run support the last time Lansing was shut out May 7.

"Pignatiello had trouble on other time," Garcia said of the loss to Wisconsin when he allowed seven runs, "Hopefully he'll learn how to make better pitches in certain situations from today and expand his repetoire."

The Chiefs (33-21) scored three runs in the fifth inning on five hits and a sacrifice fly and added two in the seventh on two hits, a walk, error and a sacrifice fly. They added single runs in the fourth and ninth.
