Kane County Cougars at Quad City River Bandits

June 11th, 2004
Game 1

Steve Bondurant is amazing, he threw a three hitter at the Swing of the Quad Cities in game one of the double header. Steve had a no hitter going untill the sixth inning when he gave up three hits and the one run. Actually lets put it this way he had a perfect game going untill two outs in the fifth. After he walked Scott Whitrock, on a couple of very close pitches, Cougar pitching coach Fernando Arroyo went out there and yelled and screamed at the ump and raised hell, he got ejected.

In the fourth and the fifth innings he struck out four, in the entire seven innings he only struck out seven, so he was getting better as the game went along. Which is kinda scary. The sixth inning started with one out, Ryan Spataro broke up the no hitter with an infield single to second. Second baseman Luke Appert was only just able to knock it down. Alex Garcia then grounded one to second, Bondurant slipped coming off the mound to cover first, Garcia was awarded a single. Ben Pattee then singled to right to score Spataro. On the play Garcia would be gunned down going ot third.

The Cougars offense took care of business starting in the fiftth inning and just kept on rolling. They would get seven runs on eleven hits. They actually could've scored some runs as early as the third inning, but not for the pitching of the Swings starter Nick Blackburn. Trevor Brown led things off with a walk. Chris Tritle then singled to left. Appert bunted then both over. That ment second and third with only one out. Luis Perez would then ground out to third. David Castillo followed that with a liner to right to end the ining. Inthe fourth inning the Cougars also had two runners on with only one out, and would not score.

That all ended in the fifth inning when the Cougars would get two runs. Tritle led off with a single to center. Appert then grounded into a double play to make it two outs. Perez singled to short. The throw from teh shortstop was high and went to the tarp. The ball would get stuck under the tarp and Perez would be awarded second. Castillo singled to right to score Perez. Vasili Spanos then doubled to right to get Castillo to third. A wild pitch would bring Castillo home and send Spanos to third. Brian Snyder flied to right to end the inning.

More fireworks for the Cougar offense in the sixth inning when they scored three runs. With two outs, Brown walked. Tritle would line one to center, the ball would go in and out of the glove of the center field, and be ruled a single. Appert walked, to load the bases. Perez singled up the middle to score both Brown and Tritle. The Swing then brough in a new pitcher, Billy Mauer came in to replace Kevin Culpepper who had come in at the beginin of the inning. Castillo singled to left to score Appert. Spanos then flew to right to end the inning.

Adding two more runs in the seventh the Cougars sealed the game. Snyder led off with a single to right. Dustin Majewski walked. Kory Wayment then reached on a fielder's choice, with Majewski being out at second. Brown would walk to load the bases. Mauer threw a wild pitch which moved all the runners up a base, including allowing Snyder to score. Tritle flew out to left, on the play Wayment tagged up and scored. Appert would walk. The Swing made another pitching change to bring in Peter Tauter to replace Mauer. Perez would walk to load the bases. Castillo got caught looking for strike three to end the inning.
