Kane County Cougars at Quad City River Bandits

July 3rd, 2004

Is this team the new cardiac kids, it seems like its night after night that this team makes things interesting in the late innings, for both the good and the bad. I mean this team is going to get me to drinkin at this rate.

The Cougars made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth of the game, as the had the winning run up to bat with two outs. With one out Trevor Brown singled to left, Luke Appert would come in to pitch run for him. Kory Wayment then popped up to short for the second out. Appert would get to second on a balk. David Harriman grounded to third for what looked like to be the game. Catcher's interference was called and everyone returned. Harriman would then single to right. For some unknown reason Cougar manager Dave Joppie stopped Appert at third. The throw wasn't even in the air to the infield yet and he stopped him. Eddie Kim then came on to pitch hit for Chris Tritle as the winning run. Kim would strike out on three pitches to end the game.

The reasont he Cougars were even that close was because the Swing couldn't capitalize on their chances. In the first inning J.R. Taylor led off with a double to right. Justin Arneson then was hit by a pitch. That ment runners on first and second with nobldy out. Kyle Phillips then hit into a double play, and Brock Peterson grounded out to strand Taylor at third.

Quad City did score the first run of the game in the second inning. Mark Zamojc tripled to right to led off the second. Kyle Geiger then hit a fly to center, Zamojc tagged up and scored. The Swing then stranded single runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth they would score one run and have another cut down trying to score. Phillips led off with a walk. Peteson and Zamojc then both struck out. Geiger singled to center to get Phillips to second. Omar Burgos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Cougars then made a pitching change. Taking out Jared Trout and bringin in Jarod McAuliff. Alex Garcia greated McAuliff with a single to right to score Phillips. Geiger also tried to score but was cut down at the plate by a nice throw from Luis Perez and tag by David Harriman.

The Cougars scored one run in the third inning to tie the score at one all. With two outs, Brian Ingram walked. Nick Rogers then triple to right to score Ingram. In the fourth inning Vasili Spanos would have a one out double to left. Trevor Brown then struck out, and on the play Spanos was thrown out at third on a steal attempt to end the inning.

Kane County acually would lead in this game for an inning and a half. In the fifth inning they scored another run. Kory Wayment led off with a doubled downt he left field line. David Harriman flew out to right, Wayment would tag up and get to third. Chris Tritle watched three pitches for balls, then was intentionally walked. Tritle then stole second base. Ingram flew out to left, ont he play Wayment would tag up and score.

With one out in the sixth the Cougars had a chance to score some more runs. Brian SNyder had singled to center. Spanos then doubled to center, to get Snyder to third. Trevor Brown would be caught looking. Wayment then also had the same fate, this time to end the inning.

A messy and frustrating seventh inning for the Cougars and their fans. Ryan Spataro led off with a single to center. Taylor bunted him over to second. Arneson would single to left. Phillips was then intentionally walked to load the bases. The first pitch to Brock Peterson hit him and forced in Spataro with the tie breaking run. The Cougars then made another pitching change. This time Justin Crowder came in for McAuliff. On the third pitch to Zamojc he threw a wild pitch that would allow Arneson to score. Crowder then got Zamojc to strike out looking. The Cougars then brought in Dan Fyvie to replace Crowder. Fyvie walked Geiger to reload the bases. Burgos grounded out back to the pitcher to finally end the inning.
