Kane County Cougars at Clinton Lumberkings

July 20th, 2004

The Cougars just keep on dominating the league, as they are 26 games above the 0.500 mark and have the best record in all of professional baseball.Today they beat the Clinton Lumberkings 5-1.

Jared Trout had a good outing, he pitched six innings, giving up three hits and one homerun. Jared walked one and struck out six. The homer came in the first inning by Andrew Wishy, with two outs. After that homer, the next two inning the Kings got a runner into scoring position but that would be all for them against Trout. In the second Dane Bubela led off with a bunt single, Trout got the ball and threw it into right field, Bubela went to second on the error. One out later, Emerson Frostad grounded to second, Bubela went to third on the play. Justin Hatcher would then strike out to end the inning.

The only other time the Kings realy had a chance was in the eighth. J.R. Pickens had just come on to pitch. Hatcher led off with a walk. Casey Benjamin then struck out. Micah Furtado then reached on a fielder's choice, with Hatcher being out at second. Brenden Cashmen walked. Andrew Wishy then came up with two on and two outs. He would pop up foul to third to end the inning.

The Atheltics first round pick, or one of them, Huston Street made his proffesional debut today. He came in for the seventh inning. The first batter he faced was Bubela and after two balls, he would strike him out. Jason Fransz would be called out on strikes. All three strikes were called. Emerson Frostad then struck out to end the inning. A very impressive debut.

The Cougars would score four runs in the fourth ininng and that would basically be all they would need. David Castillo led off with a double to center. Eddie Kim would homer to right. Vasili Spanos then singled to left. Dan Putnam walked. Dustin Majewski singled to right, to score Spanos. Kory Wayment then hit into a double play, on the play Putnam scored, Majewski was out at second. Luke Appert walked. The Kings made a pitching change, bringin in Craig Frydendall to replace Matt Farnum. Brian Ingram would ground out to short to end the inning.

The seventh inning saw the Cougars get more runners on. With one out, Ingram walked. He then was caught trying to steal second. Luis Perez doubled to left. The Kings made a pitching change to bring in Tim Cunningham to replace Frydendall. He would walk Castillo. A wild pitch would move both runners into scoring position. Kim then ground to second to end the inning.

Kane County scored one more run the in the eighth inning. Cunningham did not have a good inning. He threw twelve straight balls. Which ment he walked the bases loaded of Cougars. Spanos at third, Putnam at second and Majewski at first. The Kings then made a pitching change, Joldy Watts came in for Cunningham. Wayment would strike out. Appert hit one to first, the first baseman threw home and they got Spanos at the plate for the second out. The bases remained loaded. Brian Ingram then walked, which forced Putnam in to score. Perez struck out to end the inning.

In the ninth the Cougars wouldnt score but that didnt mean it wasnt interesting. Castillo led off with a double to left. He would get to third on a wild pitch. Eddie Kim then fouled off the first pitch, the bat went a lot further then the ball did. In Clinton the roof has a low overhang. The bat wentonto the roof on the right side. First time I ever saw a bat fly like that onto roof. He got a new bat and then was caught looking for the first out. Spanos would also get caught looking. Putnam grounded out to second to end the inning.

Notes-It was a pretty good day, I won the trivia contest at the game, and won another beer coozy, this one of course has the Lumberkings logo on it.
