The Burlington Hawkeye, August 27th, 2004
RBI SIngles by Mike Gaffney and Kila Kaaihue in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Burlington Bees to a 3-2 Class A Midwest League baseball victory over the Dayton Dragons on Thursday at Fifth Third Field

The Bees tookthe first lead int he game at 1-0 with an unearned run in the fifth inning. Alan Moye reached safely and advanced to second on a throwing error to lead off the inning. One out later Walter sevilla plated Moye with a double to center field.

Burlington pitchers made the lead hold up untill the Dragons tied the game in the eighth to force extra innings. Starter Carlos Rosa, making his first appearance since May 3 after going on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right biceps, went four scoreless innings-allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Justin Sherman came out of the bullpen and retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, untill Dayton No. 9 batter Jorge Mejia duplicated Moye's feat to lead off the bottom of the eighth. After Mejia was sacrificed to third, Javon Moran singled him home and the Dragons had an unearned run of their own to even the contest.

Kyle Edens started the top of the 10th on the mound for Dayton, retiring Sevilla on a ground out to open the inning. Jeff Barry then drew a walk and Edens hit Angel Sanchez to put runner at first and second.

Gaffney's single plated Barry and reloaded the runners and first and second. A strikeout later Kaaihue came through with what proved to be the winning hit, a single to center that scored Sanchez.

Sherman ran into trouble in the bottom of the 10th, giving up a one-out single to Moran followed by an RBI triple by Ben Himes.

Nate Moore replaced Sherman on the mound and nailed Himes unassisted at the plate on a fielder's choice for the second out. A single put runner on the corner before Moore got Habelito Hernandez to ground out to Sanchez to end the game.

The Bees and Dragons play the second game of their four game series today at Fifth Third Field. Greg Atencio (7-13, 5.65 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for Burlington against Justin Mallett (4-4, 3.30)
