Dayton Daily News

The Dayton Dragons were an out away from ending their three game losing streak on Monday. But for the second game in a row, they couldn't hold a lead.

Fort Wayne's Josh Barfield singled in the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and then scored the winning run a batter later as the Wizards beat the Dragons 5-4, in front of 4,558 at Memorial Stadium. Dayton has not won a game since the season opening win over Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Field last week.

It appeared that the skid would end as Dayton scored once in the second and three times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. But the Wizards worked their magic against Dayton's bullpen and fielders, collecting seven hits and scoring three times in the final 3 2/3 innings. Fort Wayne's Joseph Hastings hit a solo homer in the eighth to close the score to 4-3 and then a throwing error with two outs in the ninth allowed the tying run to move into scoring position.

Dayton's Justin Carter pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out five.,br>
Noochie Varner was the only Dragons to collect more than one hit, going 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Jesse Gutierrez homered in the second for Dayton.
