Just three games into the Midwest League season, the Beloit Snappers were already treated to a rare day off on Easter Sunday.
Manager Don Money hopes they take some time to reflect on what went wrong in their past two defeats after winning an opening night win at Pohlman Field.
The 1-2 start after Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Swing of the Quad Cities is no big deal, but it better not be the begining of a trend.
"You look after three games and we have nine total errors,", Money said. "We gave them four runs the other day and we gave them three runs today. We're shooting ourselves in the foot. The way we're throwing the ball around the infield, it looks like a circus out there sometimes."
The Swing plated five runs in the third inning, three unearned, as Beloit committed three infield errors. Matt Moses also belted a two run homer in the inning.
Beloit starter Carlos Villanueva (0-1) took the loss, allowing only three hits and a walk and five innings. He struck out three. Only two of the five runs charged to him were earned.
"Our pitching for the most part is doing the job," Money said. "It's the defense behind them that's hurting us. We just have to make the routine plays. If they get 12 hits and knock in six runs that's one thing. but when we give then three or four runs, that's another."
The Snappers sliced it to 5-3 in the fifth inning. Steve Moss drew a one out walk off Quad Cities starter Erroll Simonitsch and an out later Gilberto Acosta singled. Robby Deevers, Drew Anderson and Lou Palmisano followed with consecutive RBI singles before reliever Pete Tautor came on to retire Tim Marks on a foul to right for the third out.
Quad Cities added a run off reliever Simon Beresford in the sixth and held Beloit to just one more run. In the eigth, Anderson reached on an error, moved to third on Palmisano's hit and scored when Marks grounded into a double play.
Kevin Culpepper picked up his first save, allowing just one unearned run on one hit through two innings.
Palmisano is off to a great start with five hits in his first 10 at bats. But at the other end of the spectrum are Moss (0 for 12) and Josh Murray (1 for 10). As a team the Snappers are hitting just .209
"If you're worried about going to 0 for 8 at this stage, you're in the wrong game." said Money, who was more concerned about lack of execution.
"Every year we preach you have to do the small things to win," he said. "That's the bottom line. We're not going to sit here and hit 300 home runs and score a lot of runs. You have to move runners over. You have to make the bunt plays."
Notes
A sprained ankle kept first baseman Manuel Ramirez out of the lineup. Saturday marked the debuts of position players Deever, Marks, Carlos Corporan and Acosta. Swing third baseman and 2003 first round draft pick Moses was 2 for 4 with two RBI's. Villanueva was picked up from the San Francisco Giants in the deal that sent Wayne Franklin and Horacia Estrada west. The Snappers host the Peoria Chiefs today at Pohlman Field (6:30 start)
