Doing the little things helped the Fort Wayne Wizards come up with a big victory Friday night.

Joseph Hastings' sacrifice bunt in the 10th inning resulted in a throwing error allowing Josh Barfield to score from second with the go ahead run as Fort Wayne used a record setting pitching performance to down South Bend 4-2 in Midwest League action at Coveleski Stadium.

In addition to breaking a five game losing streak, the Wizards set a new team record as five pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts.

After a wild pitch by closer Anthony Kozol allowed the Hawks to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Wizards bounced right back in the 10th against Brian Bruney by getting singles from Barfield and Josh Benick to open the inning.

Usually a No. 4 hitter would not be asked to bunt in that situation. For the second straight time, though cleanup hitter Hastings came through in the clutch by dragging the ball by Bruney, who in turn fired it down the left field line.

"When you are struggling like we are, you have to try and get a run anyway you can" said Fort Wayne manager Tracy Woodson.

Kevin Reinking accounted for the insurance run when he was hit by a pitch from Matt Wilkinson with the bases loaded.

It appeared South Bend might have the momentum heading into extra innings after pinch runner Clark Mace avoided the tag from Kozol with two outs to end the game.

Things were not ment to be, though, as Lino Garcia lined out to rightfield with the potential winning run at second base.

It proved to be a frustrating evening at the plate for South Bend as all nine starters fanned at least once.

One person glad to see the Wizards leave town is first baseman Kyle Nichols, who struck out five times.

"I really don't know what to say except we didn't make very good contact at the plate tonight." said South Bend manager Dick Schofield. "When we did have some chances, we just couldn't come up with the clutch hits. After playing a pretty good game, things just seemed to come apart for us in the last inning."

Making just his second start, Cory Stewart recorded 12 strikeouts over five innings and allowed just one unearned run on two hits.

Rich Barrett had two hits for the Hawks, who got on the board first in the second inning as an error allowed Lino Garcia to score all the way from first base.
