Battle Creek Yankees at Kane County Cougars

April 29th, 2004

Can someone please tell me which is the real Cougars team. One night we cant hit our way out of a paper bag, the next night we get twenty-two hits and score twenty runs. Plus we play errorless ball for the first time in what seems like forever.

Well I guess Battle Creek decided not to show up to the game tonight as they were mauled by the Cougars 20-0. There were two big stories in tonights game. Vasili Spanos had seven runs batted in. The biggest story is Cougars starter Steve Bondurant, he had a no hitter going untill one out in the ninth.

Bondurant retired the first 13 Yanks in a row. The he walked John Urick with one out in the fifth to end the perfect game. The next hitter Hector Made though lined one back to him for a double play to end the inning. After that Steve struck out fourout of the next five hitters before giving up another walk with two outs in the seventh.

In the eighth inning with two outs, Bondurant walked Estee Harris and Tommy Rojas. Rafael Rodriguez then popped one up foul near the Cougars dugout, Eddie Kim made a nice grab to end the inning. The ninth inning was fun and painfull, if your a Cougars fan. Jared Treadway lead things off by striking out. Erold Andus then lined one into center for the first hit of the game for the Yanks. After that Cougars manager Dave Joppie pulled Bondurant to a nice round of appluse. Manny Rodriguez then came on to get the final two outs for the Cougars victory.

The offense took care of things early and often in the game. With one out in the first, Nick Rogers singled to right. David Castillo then singled to left. Rogers would move to third on a wild pitch on strike three to Eddie Kim. Brian Snyder singled back to the pitcher as he fell down. On the play Rogers would score. Dustin Majewski singled to right to load the bases. Vasili Spanos then doubled to left to score Castillo, Snyder and Majewski. Kory Wayment then reached on an infield single back to the pitcher. Luis Perez would single to right to score Spanos. Brian Ingram walked to load the bases. Nick Rogers singled to short, on the play the merry-go-round continued and Wayment would score. Castillo flied to center to end the inning.

The second inning was more of the same for the Cougars. Eddie Kim was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Snyder singled to center. Majewski struck out for the first out. Spanos then took one deep off of the facing of the right field deck for a three run homer.

Nick Rogers led off the third inning with a double to left, then went ot third on a wild pitch. Castillo walked. On eout later Snyder would walk to load the bases. Majewski singled to center to score Rogers. Spanos hit a sacrifice fly to center to allow Castillo to score.

Things just kept on rolling for the Cougars in the fourth inning as they scored three more runs. Ingram would reach on an error by third baseman Eric Duncan. Rogers was hit by a pitch. Castillo would walk to load the bases. Kim singled to right to score Ingram. Snyder hit into a double play, with Kim being out at second. On the play Rogers would score. Majewski doubled to center to score Castillo.

Kane County went down in order in the fifth for the only time in the game. In the sixth with one out, Castillo walked. Kim would then single to center. The Yanks then brought in a new pitcher. One out later Majewski singled to center to score Castillo. In the seventh walks woud lead to more runs for the Cougars. Wayment lead things off by drawing a walk. Perez singled to left. Ingram would then walk to load the bases. Rogers would walk to bring home Wayment. Castillo reached on an infield single, Perez would score.

Three more runs in the eighth would put it at twenty for the day. With one out Wayment doubled to right. Perez then singled to right. Ingram would double to left to bring home Wayment. One out later, Castillo singled to center to bring home both Perez and Ingram.

Notes-there is no pitch count for today since it was a steady rain throughout the game and my scorecard is barley even readable as it is. The reason for some of the infield hits for the Cougars was because of the wet grass on the infield it was horrible to sit through. That is except for the score.
