Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Kane County Cougars

May 13th, 2004

The Cougars would led by two four run inning tonight in route to get the victory. This all helped and all but it didn't over shadow some other things in the game. Manny Rodriguez made a spot start for the Cougars because of the double header on Saturday. He went the first five innings and pitched well, except for the fourth inning.

The offense took control of the game early and aserted their control often in the game. They would score a run in the first inning. Brian Ingram led things off with a walk, he would then get to second on a wild pitch. Luke Appert would end up walking also. David Castillo moved the runners along with a ground out. Eddie Kim hit one to the warning track in center that would be caught for the second out. On the play Ingram tagged up and came home. Brian Snyder would strike out looking to end the inning.

More fun for the Cougars in the second inning when they scored four runs. Dustin Majewski started things off with a single to center. Vasili Spanos would then line one that went in and out of the glove of the right fielder, on the play Majewski scored and Spanos would rumble into second. Kory Wayment then singled to right to score Spanos. Luis Perez walked, to put runners on first and second with no outs. Ingram struck out, and Appert would fly out. Castillo singled to right to score Wayment. Kim then singled to center to score Perez. Snyder ended the inning by grounding out to the pitcher.

Well you would think that five runs would scored in two innings would leave them pretty saftley in the lead and with out any contriversy, yeah right! In the third inning things would get fun, Adam Jones singled to center, he would get to second on a wild pitch. Evel Bastida then hit one to the right field line, that somehow umpire Dixon Stureman though went fair. It was obviously foul to every one in the stands that I spoke with. More on that call later. Rodriguez regrouped after the horrendous umpiring to get Chris Colllins and Jeremy Dutton to both ground out. Chris Colton then walked. He would get to second on a bad pickoff throw from Rodriguez. Michael Cox would end the inning with a ground out back to the pitcher.

Two more runs for the Cougars in the seventh inning. Snyder started things off with a single to right. Majewski then singled to right. The Rattlers then brought in Jason Mackintosh to replace Juan Ovalles. He would walk Spanos to load the bases. The second pitch to Wayment would be wild and all the runners would advance a base, with Snyder scoring. Wayment would end up reaching on an error byt he third baseman Michael Cox. On the play Majewski and Spanos scored. Perez then singeld to right to score Wayment. Ingram would line out to the shortstop for the first out. Appert then walked. Castillo was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Kim then hit into an inning ending double play.

The Rattlers were not done scoring, in the eighth inning they put up two more runs. Josh Ellison led off with a single to short. Adam Jones the Mariners first round pick from last year, then hit a two run homer, fair to right.

A note to the umps today, this is what the "Offical Major League Rulebook" says:
A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight. A fair fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at the time he touches the ball. If a fly ball lands in the infield between home and first base, or home and third base, and then bounces to foul territory without touching a player or umpire and before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball; or if the ball settles on foul territory or is touched by a player on foul territory, it is a foul ball. If a fly ball lands on or beyond first or third base and then bounces to foul territory, it is a fair hit. Clubs, increasingly, are erecting tall foul poles at the fence line with a wire netting extending along the side of the pole on fair territory above the fence to enable the umpires more accurately to judge fair and foul balls.

FAIR TERRITORY is that part of the playing field within, and including the first base and third base lines, from home base to the bottom of the playing field fence and perpendicularly upwards. All foul lines are in fair territory.

Ok let me translate that for those people that are umpires that read this since I know they need the most help (sorry Dave A). If it dosent go to the fair side of the foul pole it is not a home run.

More Notes-on a happier note it was nice to see the players getting involved in the between inning action. The Cougars do a pedel car race, and George Sandel the second baseman for the Rattlers helped out one of the contestants. She was in last place going midway between third and second, he pushed he all the way to midway between second and first and she won.

Note-The grounds crew did a nice job on the field as it looked good. We had a down pour an hour before the game. The foul lines and the warning track were another story, but good job anyway.

More Notes-yes I know im about four days behind on reports, that said tomorrow I will be in Fort Wayme for the Cougars game at 11 in the morning, and then in Battle Creek for an evening game. The next day since the Cougars are off I will be in Indianapolis to see a game. Yes I will try to get some stuff done on the trip.
