Belleville and West Frankfort were tied today for the lead in the Illinois State Baseball League.

The league opened its season Sunday with two games being played. The third scheduled contest between Centralia and Mt. Vernon was postponed because of wet grounds.

The Belleville Stags nosed out the Mattoon WhiteSox, 6 to 5 at Belleville before a crowd of 1,000 fans. West Frankfort downed Marion 5 to 2 at Marion.

The Stags staged a two run rally in the ninth inning to defeat Mattoon. The winning run rode home on a single by Walter DeFreitas, manager and second baseman for Belleville, after two men were out.

Bill Hornsby, 20 year old son of the famed ex major league Rogers Hornsby, went hitless for Mattoon in four times at bat.

Mattoon scored twice in each of the first and fourth innings. Besides the two runs in the ninth inning. The Stags also counted twice in the first frame and single runs in the third and eighth stanzas.

Medina and Brown pitched for the Stags, permitting four hits. Belleville made nine safties off Reems and Hinds. Mattoon committed two errors in the field. Belleville made four miscues.
