After one game last week, several Dayton Dragons, including pitcher Andy Boutwell, went fishing following a game.

"I caught a couple of mosquitoes," outfielder Justin Davis said of the Thursday excursion to Rainbow Lake. "Andy got the trophy fish, a one pound catfish."

Boutwell had bigger fish to catch Saturday night, and he did more than just catch them.

Boutwell stunned the Beloit Snappers, striking out the first five batters he faced and recording his first seven outs all on strike outs on the way to a 7-3 victory for the Dragons, their first following four straight Class A Midwest League losses.

All of it was witnessed by a gathering of 8,67 at Fifth Third Field.

Boutwell, 4-0 began the season in relief and has become the team's most consistent pitcher, allowing no more than two earned runs in ay of his eight starts. he does it all with a fastball that reaches 92 mph only occasionally.

"You don't have to throw hard to get strikeouts," said Boutwell, who led the league with a 1.78 ERA entering the game, but a two run homer by Brandon Gemoll in the sixth pushed it to 1.91.

His nine strikeouts in six innings gives him 70 in 56 2/3 innings.

As well as he pitched, the Dragons needed runs for him to win, and they were provided in increments, the most coming from a Randy Ruiz two run double in the fifth and a two run homer by William Bergolla in a three run sixth.

Now Dayton maanger Donnie Scott is worried Boutwell will want to hit, too.

"What's ironic is (Reds farm director) Tim Naehring saw this last year," Scott said, "Andy was Tim's pick to click. He got the opportunity this year. He's more of a pitcher this year than a thrower. On top of that he's a good fielder. I'm sure he want to grab a bat. He's a pretty good hitter."

Scott said a game would have to go about 27 innings before he'd use Boutwell in that role. Saturday night he didn't have to.
