Wausau, Wis-Canadian seal hunters would have loved it. General Custer would have felt right at home.
Slaughter does not seem to be too harsh a word to describe what the Quad City Angels did Saturday night to the Wausau Mets.
The locals piled up 20 hits, seven home runs, and a whopping total of 32 runs to rip the Mets 32-8 in a Midwest League game.
There were several weeks earlier in the season when the Angels would have been ecstatic to get 32 runs in an entire week. Games with scored of 3-2, 4-3, 2-1-those are more the Angels' style, not double digit victories.
What has happend to the Angels is Mike Bishop
Saturday night, Bishop sent a record tying four homers flying out of the averaged-sized Wausau park and drove in a record typing 10 runs.
He pounded a two run shot that made it 2-0 after one inning. In the eight excrutiating innings to come, four Wausau pitchers watched as Bishop ripped a two run single in the second and then parked a solo homer in the fourth, a two run shot in the sixth, and a three run blast in the seventh.
Ang that isn't all. Just for good measure, Donny Jones added a three run round tripper in the second. Steve VanDeren did the same in the fourth and Brian Harper sent one out in with two on in the fifth.
Bishop's homer output tied the league record set by Bobby Smith of Clinton in 1959. Smith also had 10 RBI's in the same contest and Wausau's Jim Noonam drove in 10 earlier this season.
By the time Wausau got on the scoreboard with a six run sixth inning outburst, it was already 19-0. The Angels got two runs in the first, eight in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and fifth, three in the sixth, six in the seventh and four in the ninth. They were set down in order in the eighth.
The only Angel to be held hitless was centerfielder Greg Ris. The night wasn't a total failure for him though as he scored three times.
Getting three hits apiece were Harper, VanDeren and Steve Oliva. Bishop who also walked once, scored six times and Darryl Sconiers crossed the plate four times.
Since joining the Angels three weeks ago, Bishop has pounded 10 homers and drives in 26 runs. You could say that the Angels were efficient on the base paths. Only one runner was left on.
