Dayton Dragons at Kane County Cougars

August 21st, 2004

In a game in which the Cougars should've won 2-1, they lost 1-0. Two mental errors cost them the runs. Jared Trout pitched one of his best game, and the bullpen held but the offense just couldnt overcome those two mistakes.

In the third inning, Brian Ingram walked to lead things off. Nick Rogers then grounded one to second. He stoped midway to second, trying to get into a rundown. The second baseman threw to the first baseman, who was on the bag, and got Rogers out by a couple of feet. Ingram seeing that one out was made tried to get to second but would be tagged out just before he got to the bag by the first baseman. After that Luke Appert then doubled down the right field line. It wouldve score one run to give the Cougars then lead. David Castillo ended the inning with a pop out to second.

In the eighth inning the mistake looked to be either third base coach Aaron Niecula or Dan Putnam's. Putnam led off with a walk. Ingram bunted him over to second, a wild pitch would get him to third with only the one out. Nick Rogers then flew one to right that looked plenty deep, but Putnam didnt tag up and score. It wouldve tied the game up. Luke Appert then grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Cougars alson led off an inning with a walk four times and a hit by pitch once, none would score. In the first, Rogers walked. Appert singled to right. Castillo would line out to left. Eddie Kim and Brian Snyder struck out to end the ining. In the fourth inning, Kim led off with a walk. Snyder would then hit into a double play. In the fifth inning, Trevor Brown led off with a hit by pitch. He went to second on a wild pitch. Putnam and Ingram both popped out. Rogers would strike out to end the inning.

Jared Trout pitched well. He gave up three hits and one run in six innings. Jared didnt walk anyone and struck out seven. Between a leadoff single in the second and trouble in the sixth, he retired 12 in a row. The Dragons would score the one run in the sixth inning. Matt Gray doubled to center. Jorge Mejia then grounded out to second, Gray moved to third. Luis Bolivar would get something done that the Cougars couldnt, he flew out to center, Gray would tag up and score.

Justin Crowder pitched very well, he went two and one thirds innings. He struck out the first four he faced. In all he struck out six of the seven hitters he faced. J.R. Pickens then came in and gave up a hit. He got the final two outs without a problem.

Notes-The Cougars have widened Kim's stance big time, its almost as if he is now taking up the whole depth of the box. He also isnt striding anymore.
