An eight run third inning sealed a win for the Cougars in game one of the Midwest League Championship series against the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Cougars would score twice more int he game. The Caps hit two homers, and scored three runs on Cougar mistakes later in the game.

Trent Peterson pitched well for the Cougars. He went seven innings, and really only had one rough inning, thats the inning in which he gave up three runs. Besides that he settled down and gave up three hits.

In the fourth inning the Caps would hit them outta the park. Kelly Hunt hit a one out solo shot to left center. Kody Kirland then walked. Garth McKinney hit a two run homer to left center. After that Trent got Vince blue to ground out and Juan Llamas to line out to finish off the inning.

The offense really would be the story of the game for the Cougars as they just hit in the begining of the game. In the first inning they would score one run. Brian Ingram led off by being hit by a pitch. Luke Appert then walked. Vasili Spanos was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dan Putnam singled to right. Unfortantly Cougar third base coach Aaron Neickula held the runner at third and we basically ended up with three runners between second and third. Ingram scored on the single, Appert would be tagged out. With runners now on second and third with one out, David Castillo lined out to third. Eddie Kim grounded out to third to end the inning.

The third inning would be the difference in the game. Appert led off with a single to right. Spanos then singled to left. Putnam lined one to center. The center field either droped the ball or came really close to catching it as it somehow fell in. Appert would score. A wild pitch let Spanos score and Putnam get to third. Castillo walked. Kim then doubled to left to score Putnam. One out later, Rich Robnett singled to right to score Castillo. The Caps then made a pitching change. One out later, Ingram singled to left to score Kim. Appert hit a three run homer to right center.

The other run the Cougars would score came in the seventh inning. Putnam led off with a single to right. He moved to second on a wld pitch. A ground out by Castillo moved him to third. Kim singled to right to score Putnam. A wild pitch moved Kim to second. Harriman and Robnett both struck out which would end the inning.

The mistakes are what let the Cpas back into shouting distance of the lead. In the eighth inning. Juan Francia led off with a single back to the pitcher, Justin Crowder. Eric Rodland was hit by a pitch. Danilo Sanchez then walked to load the bases. Dan Fyvie came in for Crowder. Fyvie got Kelly Hunt on strikes for the first out. Kody Kirkland then singled to left to score Francia. McKinney grounded one back to Fyvie, who was going to start the pitcher to catcher to first double play. Fyvie threw the ball over the catchers head to allow Rodland to score. Vince Blue then grounded one to Appert at second, he would collide with Kirland who was going to second. Kirkland was called out on runners interference for the second out. Juan Llamas was caught looking to end the inning.

Jason Windsor had a great ninth inning. He struck out Jason Knoedler looking. Juan Francia swingin. Eric Rodland looking to end the game.
